Out with the old, In with the new

Here's the deal.  While bringing the trash to the dump, we broke our kitchen garbage can.  It was just one of those cheap plastic things.  Well, I've been looking around trying to find one to replace it, but I want something different.  Our kitchen trash doesn't go into a cupboard, so it sits out for all to see.  I want something asthetically pleasing.   I'm looking for ideas.  This isn't a contest or a challenge, but what kind of container could I use?  I tried an old milk can.  Not a good idea.  My kitchen is very old, farmhouse in blue and yellow.  Now I know this isn't the most urgent need, but light-hearted.  Got ideas?  I'd love to hear them.  Maybe I'll even come up with some kind of prize....(Watch out)

A friend of mine is using a wooden potato bin, with a lift-up hinged lid, lined with plastic inside. Hers sits out as well. It's nice...blends in with her somewhat rustic cabinets.

The milk can would have been cute (I can picture it with the bottom painted in a blue and yellow checkerboard pattern with some type of decal or painted design on the front. perhaps a nightcap style bonnet across the top with elastic. Or possibly a large wooden circle cut to fit like a cork if it didn't already have a lid on it.) but it also would have taken a lot of work to make it work and probably too much trouble unless you have the equipment or tools. You would need to have the top of the canister cut off the can (below the handles where the can becomes a straight vertical, you would put your trash bag in this part). You would then have to reattach the top of the can with some form of hinge, possibly welded on or with screws on one side only. Lift on the handles to open and deposit the trash. It would be a one of a kind and a conversation piece. I know a lot of work for just a trash can. Maybe a single canvas laundry sorter on coasters (again painted or decorated on the canvas) and insert plastic liner bag into the canvas liner. But I'm not sure how you might cover it on the top. Oh well I was just trying to give you ideas. You've got me on a creative binge now so IF I do think of anything else I hope you won't mind it I send them your way. I think this is clever. They should post your challenge on the HSB Front Porch. Good Luck. Sincerely, Brenda

My thought was a potato bin as well.
