I am rejoicing. My hens have started laying again after almost a month's sabbatical. We're only getting four eggs a day, but I know that will increase as the daylight increases. And then I started thinking....
I've been reading about GMO corn and GMO soybeans and so on. Realizing these are in the scratch and the laying mash that I give my chickens, I realized these are getting into my diet as well. What to do?Time to go on line for some research. I couldn't find anyone up here that raises organic corn and soy. If it's organic, can it still be GMO? I can order organic feed on line, but it's cost prohibitive, not a good idea. So...I can grow my own organic corn, but that's a bit labor intensive considering all of the other projects we have going right now. My chickens free range all summer, I supplement their feed with kitchen scraps all winter. I grow extra vegies for them, but it's not enough to keep them all winter. So I guess I'll just eat these eggs, knowing they're still better than the store bought. I'll just be thankful for the eggs. There's only so much I can do, the Lord will take care of the rest.
Home grown eggs are so much tastier than the ones I get at the store. I shouldn't read so much.

Home grown eggs-uck??

Ours started laying about a week ago too. I'm only getting about 7 a day (out of 20 hens) but that's better then none. I agree with you..there's not much you can do in the winter months.I try not to read to much either. Home grown eggs are SO much better then bought...but you would not believe the people I've came across who will ONLY eat bought eggs and will not touch the ones from off someones farm...LOL. Maybe they're the ones who need to be reading..LOL Have a great day :)

I don't know where you're located but there should be a farmer or feed store somewhere that sells organic chicken feed. We have to go 130 miles for ours but it's worth it to know we're not getting some yuck passed on to us through our eggs. Hope you can find a source.

We've been getting our feed from Mark Thell (4 Quarters Holdings is the name of his business/farm) in Wrenshall. However, we have just heard (not had a chance to talk with him to get the straight-skinny yet) that he is discontinuing selling it off the farm. He seems to be in some kind of a transition period but I'm not yet sure of the details.

From what I understand, organic food is not supposed to have gmo in it. But you are right, we can only do the best we can.
Those homemade eggs are so good. I don't have chickens anymore, at least for the time being I buy mine from anyone who will sell them to me. I am sure they dont get organic feed all the time but they are so much better than commercial eggs. I am very grateful to get them. :)

As organic farmers, I can tell you that one cannot use GMO seed when farming organically.
I have a huge demand for soy free eggs, which is really tough with our winters. It's so hard to keep protein levels high enough so they can lay eggs. -
