Blessed New Year!
I could start the new year complaining about the weather. Uh...but part of my New Year's resolution is to stop complaining and work on a grateful heart. Look on the bright side-my mom says with weather this cold those nasty cold and flu viruses die.
Getting outside every morning to do chores is a real push, but once out there it's very refreshing.
With Christmas behind us, I'm going to start working on prepping my fiber. I have bags and bags of mohair, angora, alpaca and wool up in the cubby. I have plans and ideas and seems like this would be the ideal time to get going on these projects.
This is some of the angora/mohair that I carded up yesterday.
I'd like to dye and card up some of the alpaca so I can try doing some felting with it. That will be next.
This is so much fun. Spinning and carding are very addicting.

Bucket of Chicken(s)
A balmy 12 above 0 this morning. Must be winter. No one told this little lady.
Son came in the house carrying her under one arm and a bucket in the other. The bucket full of little chicken "nuggets". Fourteen of them in all. Here's hoping that they're a hardy bunch. The weather is only getting colder. Mama has her job cut out for her. She has a heat lamp to help.
These little ones could be giving us eggs by March. Seems a long way off. :)
Don't forget it's Farmhouse Friday. Stop on over at http://www.therenegadefarmer.com/ and see what's up on the farm.

Minnesota Cold
At five am, the moon was shining so bright that I didn't need a flashlight outside, but it was coldddddd.
I knew it before I even went outside because the house was popping and making small exploding noises as the wood was contracting.
Stepping outside, the first breath made me gasp. Just like the old days......
How cold was it?
Well...I went to start the van to let it warm up and it actually moaned before deciding whether to start or not. Once started, it still was undecided as to whether it should keep running. My daughter's car wouldn't start at all.
Going out to the barn, my nostrils were frozen together, making it a challenge to inhale.
My jacket started making funny noises, cracking and sqeaking making me wonder if I touched it, would it shatter?
The snow sounded the same as my jacket.
Climbing into the van, the seats felt like plywood. How can upholstery freeze? I didn't think that there was any moisture in car seats.
Then, of course, there's the flat tire syndrome. The part of the tire that rests on the ground, freezes flat and makes a kerplunkety, plunkety, plunkety noise going down the road, and gives you the added benefit of feeling like you're driving without shocks.
It's for this reason that we don't have a thermometer. Who really needs to know how cold it is? Once we were in the van, we had a thermometer and it read -40. Just like the old days...
