Woke up to a thick fog this morning and a cow bellering in the pasture. Turned out she couldn't find her calf. He was laying just a few feet from her and wouldn't respond to her cries. Not a very obedient son.
Wild stawberry season is here and, Lord willing, I'm going to get out there and pick some. Wild strawberry jam is my honey's favorite. And then, I hope to weed my garden for the rest of the day-after I make some cheese, yogurt and butter.
With all of this milk coming it's hard to keep up. I'm still looking for customers who could use some raw milk or fresh cheese, but I'm not a good salesman. So my kitchen is always looking like a home dairy. I still feel totally blessed with this cow and all of this milk.
What kinds of things do you do to celebrate the 4th? We don't really have any traditions in our family. We may go to a nearby town Sunday night to watch fireworks and then have a picnic at my parents house on Monday. One thing we have done every year since we were married is to light off some fireworks of our own. In Minnesota, most fireworks are outlawed, but the ones that sit on the ground and make a lot of noise and smoke are the ones we use.
Also, my bees are going gangbusters. I get to put another super on today. They've filled two so far. This is the best year I've had for bees.
Well, the fog is lifting a bit. Time for milking and chores. Thanks for visiting. Hope you have a very blessed Fourth of July.

A Bee-u-tee-ful Day
We got the call on Thursday, time to pick up our bees. So early Saturday morning we left for Hackensack. I only got one package of bees, and this is also my first time with packaged bees. I've gotten nucs before but ended up with a diseased colony last summer.
Getting the package of bees in the hive was a bit more than I bargained for.
Here's the package of bees. There are about 10,000 bees in the package and one queen.
Next, I got suited up. I don't have a bee suit, kinda made my own.
(Yes, I look like a dork.)
I took the queen out and hung her in her little cage on the edge of a frame. Then I took a couple of frames out of the hive and poured the bees into it. They didn't all want to go. :) But I only got stung once.
Next I put on a pollen patty and sprinkled some medicated sugar for them. Then on went the top feeder and I filled it with sugar syrup. Then the cover and I laid the package with the rest of the bees by the opening of the hive.
The back hive is just my unused supers, the front one is the one that the bees are in. By evening all of the bees were in the hive and I closed it up for the night. I checked it again this morning and fed them some more syrup. I think I have happy bees. I'll check on the queen in a day or two and make sure she got out of her cage.
That's that. Hope they do well.

Mid Winter Blah
I think I have that dreaded disease-blogger's block. Can't think of anything to write about that might be even mildly entertaining. So you're going to just get a run down of day to day goings on here.
I finally got all of my seeds ordered. I ordered from Baker's Creek and Richters. Richter's has more herbs than the other catalogs I get and their prices are good. You might want to check them out. Google them to get their website.
I'm ordering bees today. The last two years with the bees haven't been great, but I'm going to try again. I am definitely learning as I go. Could get to be expensive lessons, though.
The days are still short and very dreary. No sun for awhile now and my chickens have stopped laying. More bitter cold coming this weekend, could be another -30 or -40.
We're expecting some unexpected kids soon. One of my Angora does was bred a month early. (An escapee buck) and now she's threatening to have her kids. Praying she waits until this cold snap is over.
Making plans to have a booth at the county fair this year. It would be mostly herbs and produce with maybe some yarns and soaps thrown in. A good way to get our farm name out there and let people know what we have.
And it's tax time. Time to get organized and get it done. Maybe I'll start this weekend, maybe not. I really don't mind it as I have finally learned to keep everything in one place, it just needs to be sorted and calculated.
That's about it from the farm. Thanks for stopping by. Be blessed.
