Our cattle haven't had any calves, yet. A little later than normal this year, but that's alright considering the cold temps and snow we're having.
Doesn't mean that some of these girls aren't more than ready.
This is the last cow from our original herd. She's getting older, but she throws beautiful calves.

Friday
The mosquitoes have hatched! They attacked when I went out this morning. I guess it's inevitable.
This is a busy time of year for us. Seeding fields, putting in the garden, cleaning the yard etc. The cows busted through again, into the goat pasture. What a mess. They've demolished the fencing and so I have another job today. I tend to get a bit upset with those cows sometimes.
We spent the day at the Mall of America yesterday. It was a long day, but I think the kids had a good time. Their ochestra played in one of the entertainment courts. I'll post pictures later.
So there's the Reader's Digest version of what's going on around here. Today I hope to be out in the garden ALL day-after I get the fencing done. :)
Oh-it hit 101 degrees when we were in the Cities yesterday!!!I thought my thermometer had broke! Unreal.
Well-Hi Ho, Hi Ho...
Have a blessed day.

Calving Time
We finally got our snow. There's about a foot of it on the ground, which is a good thing, we needed the moisture.
It's also calving time on the farm. Our cows calve outside but not usually in this much snow. We have a couple of new heifers-first time calvers- that I'm a bit concerned about. One girl is very 'petite' and she's ready to drop any day now.
So it's up and outside early every morning to check and then in three or four hour intervals until 10 or 11 at night. I dread crawling from my warm bed, throwing some boots and a coat on and going outside. My honey and I take turns, but I'm thinking I'm pretty lazy. Once outside it's actually pretty nice. The cattle are so big and pregnant that they let you scratch them under their chins and rub their ears, it's easier than trying to move away from you. :)
Our only milk cow should calve sometime in the next two weeks. Fresh milk again! Our daughter is getting a couple of pigs to raise on the milk. We go through a lot of bacon and this might be a way to save a bit of money while eating "healthy bacon"? Is there such a thing?
I think I'll call it a day a bit early.
Good night.

That's Farm Life
Life on the farm isn't always pleasant. Things happen. We had one of those things happen last Friday. One of our cows went down. She appeared to have a spinal injury. We treated her with an anti inflammatory and waited. Well, she never showed any improvement and today we put her down. No, I'm not particularly attached to these cows. They're pretty cows, nice, friendly cows, but they're our income on the farm. We had this girl butchered today and it looks like she's going to be good hamburger. I am so thankful that she's not going to be wasted. We had no cattle to butcher this year and now we do. Thank you Lord.
You should have seen my children out there with the butcher as he showed them the organs and explained his findings. Seems our cow had a heart problem and had some calcification causing a large blockage in her heart. So went the biology lesson today.
Later, after the butcher had left, my children went out and cut up the gut pile and hauled it away into the woods. My son said he doesn't thing anything will ever gross him out again. Way to go guys.
So, no pictures today, and I'd be pretty thankful for that.
