I'm still here. Christmas and New Year's have past. January is time to start thinking about taxes and gardens. Let's just think about the gardens and our CSA-Community Supported Agriculture.<br />
<br />
Glory Farm is located in Floodwood, MN. We grow all of our produce organically, though we're not certified. We are now offering 2017 garden shares. There are two sizes this year- half shares and full shares. Our half shares feed two and our full shares feed four, depending how much you love to eat, of course. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6Pid-deoSbo/WG6YTDRVawI/AAAAAAAABi4/8SABN10S0FYy8ieNqpBxkbfd4CZjQW90QCLcB/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6Pid-deoSbo/WG6YTDRVawI/AAAAAAAABi4/8SABN10S0FYy8ieNqpBxkbfd4CZjQW90QCLcB/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We will be including many herbs in the shares and offering over 25 different types of fruits and vegetables.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OAOVZRHbvPs/WG6ZIcTYoHI/AAAAAAAABjA/Nq8Trf9xfZ8yZOUCnSu81FOyI33RkXgFgCLcB/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OAOVZRHbvPs/WG6ZIcTYoHI/AAAAAAAABjA/Nq8Trf9xfZ8yZOUCnSu81FOyI33RkXgFgCLcB/s400/002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Our season will start in June and extend into October for a total of 18 weeks.<br />
<br />
We're also offering a bread share this year. A loaf of artisan bread delivered weekly with your vegetables. <br />
<br />
Half shares-$250 (Less than $14 a week)<br />
Full shares-$400<br />
Bread shares-$54<br />
<br />
We have a limited amount of shares so get your order in early.<br />

Winter is definitely on it's way. Snowflakes have fallen on more than one occasion. A lot of loose ends left to tie up.<br />
Here's the exciting news:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mSHEC0P6Sa0/WAIxPdl9fwI/AAAAAAAABh8/M2RopPZBM6g3z53ijRCh-HlSdZtiW4fnACLcB/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mSHEC0P6Sa0/WAIxPdl9fwI/AAAAAAAABh8/M2RopPZBM6g3z53ijRCh-HlSdZtiW4fnACLcB/s320/009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The hoophouse is ready to use. Going to experiment with a couple of short, cold-weather crops. Maybe some radishes and romain. It's really late to do that, but...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1M_lhAZ7NZ0/WAIxO08UqoI/AAAAAAAABh4/r7RWS1XsCYcU_mTUqIsLuRwE3U6-XoC0gCEw/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1M_lhAZ7NZ0/WAIxO08UqoI/AAAAAAAABh4/r7RWS1XsCYcU_mTUqIsLuRwE3U6-XoC0gCEw/s320/010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M986oZNa1Vw/WAIxQzlItjI/AAAAAAAABiA/mT6BLyH9GZc6W5QvxI2jAeEhs8tWDkvhACEw/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M986oZNa1Vw/WAIxQzlItjI/AAAAAAAABiA/mT6BLyH9GZc6W5QvxI2jAeEhs8tWDkvhACEw/s320/011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
If nothing else, I can move my rocking chair in here and enjoy the tropical climate. I'm so blessed.<br />
Today I hope to get the garlic in-finally.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MCz6Zm7mxdI/WAIx9b47YpI/AAAAAAAABiI/4QcLdH41m94W6OlFj7aByJacWKOX_gmoQCLcB/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MCz6Zm7mxdI/WAIx9b47YpI/AAAAAAAABiI/4QcLdH41m94W6OlFj7aByJacWKOX_gmoQCLcB/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Get the carrots, cabbage and squash into the cellar. And just kind of tidy up. I have sheep hooves to trim and a couple of vaccinations to give. <br />
<br />
CSA news-We have one week left for deliveries. This week it'll be added-value products. Some herb mixes, soup mixes, dressings and maybe some bread. Then on to planning for next year-with a hoophouse!!!<br />

Not that I mind reading, but the pictures add so much to the text. Well, my camera gave up the ghost about three weeks ago and so I haven't posted the progress of my vegetable sales and all of the exciting details of my life. ;-P <br />
<br />
My daughter has a 35mm digital camera with so many bells and whistles, you need a semester of classes to be able to use it. She has graciously offered it to me to use and I finally started reading the manual today. Took my first pictures. So I should be up and sharing with you once more. Maybe the quality of my photography will improve too. More pictures make the text tolerable?? ;)<br />
<br />
Now I just have to figure out how to put the pictures onto my laptop. odiiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01110172156488999203noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8962471421298258589.post-78975051337245779772016-08-17T10:48:00.002-05:002016-08-17T10:48:49.048-05:00Week #5Hard to believe that summer's slipping away. Summer garden crops are giving way to fall crops. I hope to keep the CSA up and running into October. Hoping. <br />
<br />
The green beans and cucumbers are abundant and I am so grateful. The rutabagas, broccoli and brussel sprouts could use some cooler weather. Looks like we might have to skip broccoli this year.<br />
<br />
It's time to put food up for the winter. Canning and dehydrating and my kitchen is always a mess. I'm going to try <a href="http://ahomegrownjournal.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mama Pea's</a> recipe for fermented vegetables. Just finished up some dill pickles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Have more beans to can and more garlic to dehydrate. <br />

Anyways, this week's offerings include kohlrabi and cucumbers.<br />

Deer have found the peas. I should still get a decent amount, but they ate off the tops of some of the plants.<br />
<br />
This week's boxes will have peas, basil, lettuces, chard, kale, carrots and maybe a few onions. This is more of a challenge than I thought it would be. Surely a learning experience.<br />
<br />
My herbs beds are growing like crazy. Unfortunately, the good growth has overshadowed my little rosemary and thyme plants and they're stunted. <br />

Finally-I'm going to do it. I'm selling shares of my produce. My garden is 3/4 of an acre. Much more food than my honey and I can use. <br />
<br />
Produce available now is kale, Swiss chard, a variety of lettuces, rattail radishes, basil, oregano, cilantro and mints. Peas and new potatoes will be ready in about a week.<br />
<br />
This is our hoop house going up. It won't be beneficial this year, but next year is should extend our growing season by 2-3 months.<br />

A little later than normal this year, but that's alright considering the cold temps and snow we're having. <br />
Doesn't mean that some of these girls aren't more than ready.<br />

Blog entries two days in a row. Feeling homesteady, I guess.<br />
Today I started an experiment with my loom. I'm making a rug out of wool fiber. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ht557GW7aIk/VusXajXPf6I/AAAAAAAABeo/uTxCVnKaYJIcsPafJkbwNXkK1tEQiOh1A/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ht557GW7aIk/VusXajXPf6I/AAAAAAAABeo/uTxCVnKaYJIcsPafJkbwNXkK1tEQiOh1A/s320/002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I card this and twist it into a long rollag. Then I use it for the weft in the rug.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L_lcax6qNcM/VusXpSSDeSI/AAAAAAAABes/gdiRQembEtoP27Es7LwJaGdInA5QIIbhw/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L_lcax6qNcM/VusXpSSDeSI/AAAAAAAABes/gdiRQembEtoP27Es7LwJaGdInA5QIIbhw/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I know there has to be an easier way than the way I'm doing this. I plan on washing it after it's done so the fibers can bind better. I'll post a picture when it's finished. (But only if it turns out.)<br /><br />

<br />
Today-I'll grab a cup of coffee and a good movie and not feel guilty about it.<br />

We finally have some real January weather. It's been -30 two mornings in a row, now. Finally weather we can brag about. :)<br />
<br />
Have you been over to <a href="http://ahomegrownjournal.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mama Pea's </a>blog? She's been making some beautiful rugs. I like making <a href="http://glory-farm.blogspot.com/2012/01/making-rugs.html" target="_blank">rugs</a> though mine never look as nice, or lay as flat as hers. I took a class on weaving last October and fell in love with the rigid heddle loom. This loom is much easier to warp and set up than the standard table loom that I never used and finally gave away.<br />
This is the one that I gave away- <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4HvqjkiSc8w/VpVkcQtLHXI/AAAAAAAABdA/5tiFpsGzFII/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4HvqjkiSc8w/VpVkcQtLHXI/AAAAAAAABdA/5tiFpsGzFII/s320/004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I've been practicing on my new loom and thought I'd try a rug.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MIdUjUHrkuM/VpVk1bZ08wI/AAAAAAAABdI/X-pAAF4gx3Q/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MIdUjUHrkuM/VpVk1bZ08wI/AAAAAAAABdI/X-pAAF4gx3Q/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I am pleased with the finished project.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0sjVX81ofUU/VpVlDEeGXbI/AAAAAAAABdQ/bBobdSy7lMg/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0sjVX81ofUU/VpVlDEeGXbI/AAAAAAAABdQ/bBobdSy7lMg/s320/004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MK4GexPswOs/VpVlEk_wfEI/AAAAAAAABdY/8JNwHQib3RU/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MK4GexPswOs/VpVlEk_wfEI/AAAAAAAABdY/8JNwHQib3RU/s320/005.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
So is Houston, he thinks it's his new bed. The rug isn't as tight a weave as my great-grandma used to do on her rug loom, but I think it'll hold up alright. I used t-shirts for the weft. I'm ready to start another one. I'm loving this.<br />
<br />
I also have a sweater to finish. I've lost my enthusiasm for making it, but I know it has to get done. It's made out of alpaca that I sheared, dyed and spun. I like the look, but I'd rather be making rugs, now.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SylQyqfk2jY/VpVluVoVTUI/AAAAAAAABdk/TDbmoe-61r8/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SylQyqfk2jY/VpVluVoVTUI/AAAAAAAABdk/TDbmoe-61r8/s320/007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
January is a great time for these projects. Christmas behind us and taxes ahead of us. January is time for a break.<br />

They were urging everyone to pick their pumpkin up now if they wanted pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. I'm not sure what is causing this shortage. (I didn't read that far.) I'm thinking most people who are reading this don't buy canned pumpkin anyways. Pumpkins from the garden always make the best tasting pie.<br />
Below is this year's crop. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6qG0e09uS3U/VhbHQLZ8FGI/AAAAAAAABY8/eN9kQUPZ-Go/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6qG0e09uS3U/VhbHQLZ8FGI/AAAAAAAABY8/eN9kQUPZ-Go/s320/001.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are the biggest pumpkins I've ever grown. The big one in front is over 100#. Not a prize winner, but what do you do with it? Too big to eat???</div>
<br />

And my newest present from my honey..a W-6. I used to make hay with a W-4 that I had to crankstart. Reliving my youth. (This one has electric start.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was just a show and tell post, I guess. But if anyone has a pumpkin shortage, just let me know and I'll see what I can do.</div>

I've tried to do it a few different ways. I've done it on the stovetop, in the oven and outside. Everytime I do it in my home, my honey sleeps in his truck. :) He says the smell makes him gag. I get a bit upset because the smell is perfectly fine for me. But...Eureka! I have found a solution that suits us both. I render the lard in a crockpot out on the front porch. The porch is enclosed and the dog can't help himself to the fat. I can't do as much at a time, but it doesn't burn and doesn't have to be watched as closely as on the stove.<br />

Crockpots can be picked up at garage sales for next to nothing. Throw the diced fat into it and go about your day, checking in from time to time. <br />

Me too. <br />
<br />
So, today I took my two little charges and met some friends at the botanical gardens about 50 miles from here. It was wonderful. It smelled like plants, looked like a jungle and the heat and humidity were wonderful.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Ak77pmMxtw/VO0fzk-rW9I/AAAAAAAABUU/x-oB39gPCzk/s1600/greenhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Ak77pmMxtw/VO0fzk-rW9I/AAAAAAAABUU/x-oB39gPCzk/s1600/greenhouse.jpg" /></a></div>
The kids could take their jackets off and run round and round. We walked along the palm lined paths and admired the hibiscus in bloom. <br />
<br />
Then we put on our jackets, hats and mittens and ventured out into the frozen city. What a blessing to have this resource so close and free of charge.<br />
<br />
This was a great way to stop the cabin fever that's been rearing it's ugly head from time to time. <br />
<br />

They're dry and tasteless. Maybe it's because I usually buy them at the gas station bakery? A couple of years ago, while sitting in a tea house, I was served the most delicious scones. Soft and tender and addicting. So, now knowing what a scone was supposed to taste like, I went in search of a recipe that would yield such scrumptious biscuits.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_hpvFnuqvJc/VNzHnYS0qwI/AAAAAAAABTs/Z7jTxhoYLb0/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_hpvFnuqvJc/VNzHnYS0qwI/AAAAAAAABTs/Z7jTxhoYLb0/s1600/001.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
And now I would like to share it with you. This recipe is from "The Old Farmhouse Kitchen" cookbook.<br />
The Best Scones<br />
<br />
Sift together:<br />
2 cups flour<br />
1/3 cup sugar<br />
3 tsp.baking powder<br />
1/4 tsp. salt<br />
<br />
Cut into flour mixture like pie crust:<br />
1/2 cup butter<br />
<br />
Mix together in a cup:<br />
3/4 cup sour cream<br />
1 egg<br />
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla<br />
<br />
Add to dry ingredients until soft dough forms. Roll into 8 inch disk. Cut into wedges. Separate. Bake at 375 got 12-15 minutes. Best served hot. If adding berries or chocolate, mix into flour before adding the sour cream mixture.<br />
<br />
I also drizzle with powdered sugar icing. This morning I didn't have any sour cream, so I used warm fresh cream I had setting out to make butter. It worked just as well.<br />
<br />
Enjoy!odiiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01110172156488999203noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8962471421298258589.post-30554935864299829842015-01-24T09:09:00.000-06:002015-01-24T09:09:05.493-06:00Fire Cider and Numerous Other ThingsI think this is one of those things that everyone knows about and I'm a bit behind the times. I'd never heard of Fire Cider until a friend mentioned it in an email as if I should already know about it.<br />
<br />
I looked it up, got a recipe and made a batch yesterday. I found a recipe at http://mountainroseblog.com/fire-cider/ .<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gCDB_6_3Cew/VMOybW3g_NI/AAAAAAAABTE/qAZolPeqja0/s1600/022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gCDB_6_3Cew/VMOybW3g_NI/AAAAAAAABTE/qAZolPeqja0/s1600/022.JPG" height="320" width="289" /></a></div>
This is supposed to boost your immune system. It has to set for a month before I can use it, but I'm thinking it might also work for our livestock. I currently buy a natural immune booster for them.<br />
<br />
Since I was on a healthy kick, I started more wheatgrass.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XXh-QWxISAM/VMOy6qjr2QI/AAAAAAAABTM/SuZUp5at6Wg/s1600/023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XXh-QWxISAM/VMOy6qjr2QI/AAAAAAAABTM/SuZUp5at6Wg/s1600/023.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a sprouter that I bought over 20 years ago and used it for the first time a couple of months ago. The wheatgrass tastes great and it's good for us and our cats and our chickens.<br />
<br />
I might as well throw everything into this post. My honey just asked if I'd blogged about his new toy. So here's a picture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ty4L4qqC98s/VMOzm2aHYxI/AAAAAAAABTU/8ZyAwYbrdQM/s1600/020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ty4L4qqC98s/VMOzm2aHYxI/AAAAAAAABTU/8ZyAwYbrdQM/s1600/020.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
You can't see it, but there's a grapple hook on the loader and we can haul two large round bales at a time. Best thing? The cab is enclosed with a HEATER!!!<br />
<br />
Last, but not least, we had a surprise last week...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wlHoRAMgHQw/VMO0TL-ubSI/AAAAAAAABTc/DT3cEDDtqFU/s1600/019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wlHoRAMgHQw/VMO0TL-ubSI/AAAAAAAABTc/DT3cEDDtqFU/s1600/019.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Praise God, the weather has been warm. This guy is from a cow we bought last spring and I guess she was exposed to the bull a bit earlier than we thought. I named the calf Surprise. He's healthy and jumping around like he should.<br />
<br />
Time for a late breakfast. This is turning into a <strike>lazy </strike>relaxing day.<br />

The latest? Corn cob soda. This was used in place of baking soda.<br />
<br />
Corncob "soda" A substitute for bicarbonate of soda, used in the South
during the blockade. It was discovered that corncob ashes, especially
from red cobs, possessed the alkaline needed to raise bread. After they
were burned and the ashes collected in jars, water was added. A
teaspoonful or tablespoonful of this mixture was then used in
bread-making,<br />

Something new to try this summer. Anyone else ever tried this? odiiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01110172156488999203noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8962471421298258589.post-68090375764320686222015-01-16T09:39:00.002-06:002015-01-16T09:39:44.929-06:00Baa-Baa-Baa-Baa-Barbara AnnI have discovered that I love Shetland Sheep. I started with my two boys-Marsh and Pooh.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TCoUQ8chGJE/VLkvbh_D8vI/AAAAAAAABSY/En8-Xh926T4/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TCoUQ8chGJE/VLkvbh_D8vI/AAAAAAAABSY/En8-Xh926T4/s1600/008.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
They are hardy with wonderful fiber and besides that, they're cute.<br />
So I went out and picked up a ewe. She should be bred to lamb in April. I've named her Barbara Ann.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6DD2wNLH7q4/VLkv2etQNcI/AAAAAAAABSg/xsTr3xqzav4/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6DD2wNLH7q4/VLkv2etQNcI/AAAAAAAABSg/xsTr3xqzav4/s1600/002.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XqThJ0M6MYY/VLkv23svN2I/AAAAAAAABSk/KM9hId0eVrY/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XqThJ0M6MYY/VLkv23svN2I/AAAAAAAABSk/KM9hId0eVrY/s1600/003.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
No matter how I take her picture, it looks like her eyes are popping right out of her head. Kinda funny looking.<br />
<br />
I know there are others out there who have Shetlands and was wondering if I could get any info on this breed. Should I vaccinate? How good are they at getting out of fences? ( I'm a goat person so this is an important one. :) )<br />
<br />
Can't wait to shear and spin this fiber up.<br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This is the cucumber that I picked from the garden last August. It's an open pollinated, heirloom type, but I don't remember the name. I grabbed it and brought it into the house because is was such a fine specimen that I was going to save it for seed and didn't want the frost to get it. Now it's January and I'm thinking it's time to harvest those seeds. It's been sitting on my counter the whole time and I'm just amazed that it didn't start turning yellow until a week ago. Hasn't rotted yet, either. </span><br />

All four of the kids were here during Christmas and are hanging around for my daughter's wedding on New Year's Day. Yep, she's getting married to a wonderful man. If she let's me, I'll share some photos of the bride and groom.<br />

<br />
So, what did you get for Christmas?? I am so totally spoiled this year. I have a pair of Steger Mukluks from my children, a gift certificate for a Shetland ewe (to be picked up next week) from great friends and a promise from my honey that I can buy an essential oil distiller when he goes back to work. (That will be another post.) So now I have nothing left on my wish list-oh yeah, a new pair of Carharts would be nice....<br />
<br />

<br />
Our weather has changed and it's now an acceptable winter temp out there. Those 30-40 degrees above zero were just too strange. I got to pick the ice out of the donkey's nostrils this morning. That's normal. <br />

That's the end of another edition of News from Up North. Be blessed. <br />

Our local on line auction company had one up for sale. It sounded like something I really needed. :)<br />
I looked it up and found that it does some really cool things.<br />

Yes, it presses lard. It also has a sausage stuffer that you can use to make sausage. It can be used as a fruit press for pressing apples for apple cider!! And....someone suggested trying to use it for a cheese press. I've wanted an apple press and a cheese press for a long time. I paid too much for this contraption, but I'm going to get my money out of it.<br /><br />odiiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01110172156488999203noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8962471421298258589.post-3270809581263496742014-12-09T07:49:00.000-06:002014-12-09T07:49:11.957-06:00The Cranberry ExperienceThis post should have been written over a month ago, but better late than never?<br />
<br />
Reading my profile info it states that we try new things. So in keeping with that, I tried harvesting tame cranberries. Much different than picking the wild ones.<br />
<br />
There's a cranberry farm just 50 miles from here and I had the opportunity to help harvest in exchange for fresh cranberries. I felt like I was in an Ocean Spray commercial. Standing in water with hip waders and a rake, guiding the little guys to the suction hose which took them to the top of a semi trailer and poured them in.<br />

I was paid with almost 20 gallons of cranberries. What a blessing! The sink was full, the pots were full, juicers full, you get the picture. I canned cranberry sauce, whole cranberries, cranberry juice, cranberry syrup, and cranberry jelly. I froze cranberries and I dehydrated cranberries.<br />

I don't think that I'll harvest cranberries again, but I'm thankful for the experience and thankful for my good friend who talked me into it.<br />
